As part of our iconic “sporting classics” series: Tommie Smith and John Carlos standing on the podium after receiving gold and bronze medals in the 200m at the Olympic Games of 1968, both raise a black-gloved fist during the playing of the US national anthem. The two athletes received their medals shoeless, but wearing black socks, to represent black poverty; Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to represent black pride, while Carlos unzipped his tracksuit top to show solidarity with all blue-collar workers. The silver medalist, Australia’s Peter Norman, also joined in the protest by wearing an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge as he took his place on the podium. The title “Three Proud People, Mexico 1968” pays homage to a mural of the same name depicting the Mexico 1968 black power salutes.
