As part of our iconic “sporting classics” series: the bloodied image of Terry Butcher following the World Cup qualifier against Sweden in Stockholm on 6 September 1989. Butcher sustained a deep gash on his forehead which, despite repeated bandaging and stitches at half-time, continued to open and bleed to such an extent that by the end of the match (which ended in a 0-0 draw, virtually clinching England’s place in the following year’s World Cup) his bandaged head and shirt were soaked with blood.
